FAQ
What are DHA (Dihydroxyacetone) and Erythrulose?
DHA (Dihydroxyacetone) and Erythrulose are color additives that darken the skin by reacting with amino acids within the skin’s surface.
What are bronzers (color guide)?
What are bronzers (color guide)?
Bronzers or color guide are the products that give a temporary tanned appearance. Sunless tanners are formulated with bronzers/color guide that help to insure an even application of color on the skin and with smooth results. They are generally FD&C colors or D&C colors. Tinted moisturizers and bronze powder are perfect examples of that.
Why does AYU have a variety of sunless tanning solutions?
Every skin type is different, and every person will tan differently, resulting in the uniqueness of each product. Some clients have better results with one solution while another will ask for a different amount of color. We try to accommodate every client’s needs and we listen, research, design and formulate to come up with solutions using different raw materials that cooperate with multiple skin types.
Do you think AYU sunless tanning products stain clothes or bed sheets? If so, will it come out?
We generally recommend that a person wear loose and dark clothing after the application. Our solutions dry quickly so color transfer is not a problem. If the solution does transfer, all our colors are water-soluble and they will rinse off during a normal wash cycle resulting in stain-free clothing.
How long does the color of AYU sunless tanning products last?
The color from AYU sunless tanning products usually lasts 5 to 8 days. To get perfect results follow the instructions for “before and after care” listed on the SunlessSmart information page. Exfoliation and moisturizing is the main key in maintaining a smooth, even, and radiant tan.
What is the difference between “Clear Solution” and “With Bronzer (brown) Solution”?
Both solutions are sunless tanning solutions that contain DHA and/or Erythrulose. The Clear Solution is colorless and is either crystal clear or milky white depending on which AYU solution you are applying. The Clear Solution is good for facial application due to sensitive skin, or when clients are going to wear a white dress occasions such as weddings. Most people prefer to be sprayed with clear solution to avoid transferring unwanted color onto their expensive dress. Caution and practice is suggested before spraying with the Clear Solution.
The Bronzer solution contains FD&C or D&C colors. The need for the Bronzer Solution is that it helps the technician perform an even application that results in smooth, glowing tan; also, it aids in an “instant gratification” tan appearance with the first application. Once the DHA and Erythrulose tan develops after 4 to 8 hours, the client can wash off the bronzer and reveal a radiant, beautiful tan.

No, AYU sunless tanning products and bronzers do not provide protection from sun. All of the labels on our sunless tanning products contain the below warning:

What % DHA solution is right for me?
6% DHA is perfect for the very fair skinned clients, or those with very dry or aged skin or fading problems; also those who are extremely sensitive to sun, as well as the client who prefers a lighter softer touch of color. This is also a recommended product for a mid-week touch-up application if needed. Sensitive skin type 1 (light hair, fair skin and freckles usually burns in sun).
8% DHA is for the average client. It creates a nice medium tan depth, with optimal fading, without creating the “over baked effect”. The appropriate solution for light to medium skin tones, though it can also be applied thinner for your fairest clients. 8% DHA is versatile for a wide range of skin types. Sensitive to medium skin type 1-2 (who will tan very little in sun but burns very easily, light hair, fair skin).
10% DHA is the “enhanced” version of our popular 8% product, just slightly darker. Appropriate for all medium skinned clients and ever some of your darker skinned clients. This is a superior mid-level product, for the client who requires more depth of color, without sacrificing smooth fade-off. It is great for people who burn moderately but tan gradually and achieve medium tan in sun, most skin type 2,3 and 4 will achieve beautiful tan with 10% DHA AYU sunless tanners.
12% DHA is the darkest solution in our line up. Perfect for the client with darker skin tones, or darker skin coloration from a UV based tan. This product is an intense product, for creating lots of deep color, but it may not fade as smoothly on the fairest skin types. Use caution on hands and feet and dry skin areas. This is good for skin type 5 and 6 who minimally burns in sun and tans deeply.

How long does a spay tan last?
The duration of a spray tan can vary from person to person, typically lasting between 7 to 10 days. It's important to note that the tan gradually fades over time rather than disappearing suddenly. The natural exfoliation process of the skin causes the tan to lighten gradually.
Spray tans offer a convenient and safe alternative to sun exposure for achieving a beautiful bronzed glow. However, one common question among spray tan enthusiasts is, "How long does a spray tan last?"
For a longer-lasting spray tan, there are several key factors to consider:
- Skin Preparation: Properly exfoliating your skin before the spray tan helps remove dead skin cells and creates a fresh canvas for the tan. Clean and clear skin allows the spray tan solution to adhere better to the skin.
- Tanning Solution and Technique: The quality of the tanning solution used and the expertise of the spray tan professional are essential factors. Higher-quality solutions and skilled application techniques often result in longer-lasting tans.
- Skin Type and Maintenance: Your skin type and how well you care for your skin post tan can affect the lifespan of the tan. Dehydrated or dry skin tends to shed more rapidly, leading to faster fading. Consistently moisturizing with spray tan-safe products and avoiding excessive exfoliation can help maintain the tan's vibrancy.
- Activities and Environmental Factors: Swimming in chlorinated pools or spending extended periods in saltwater can accelerate tan fading. Additionally, excessive sweating, especially during intense workouts, can impact the longevity of the tan.
- Patience during Development: Following the recommended development time provided by your spray tan professional is crucial. Rinsing off the tan too early can diminish its effectiveness. Remember that the color will deepen over time if you opt for a rapid tan solution.
By being mindful of these factors and taking appropriate steps, you can help extend how long your spray tan lasts and enjoy a beautiful, long-lasting glow.
